A new Minnesota-based nonprofit is offering hope, structure, and a path to recovery for those too often left behind by the justice and health systems. Crescendo Resources, founded by entrepreneur and recovery advocate Ian Ulrich, officially launches this week with a mission to make high-quality addiction treatment and life-changing second chances accessible to people working with public defenders.
Ulrich, whose own experience navigating substance use disorder through the criminal justice system inspired the project, explains:
“I was fortunate to have advocates and resources that completely changed my trajectory. Most people don’t have that access. Crescendo is about leveling that playing field so everyone gets a real shot at recovery and a new start.”
Bridging Gaps With Evidence-Based Support and Digital Innovation
Crescendo Resources offers two core services:
- Outpatient Addiction Treatment: In-person, holistic programming—including therapy, peer recovery, and community-building—tailored for individuals represented by public defenders. Services emphasize mental health, physical wellness, spiritual connection, and active community engagement.
- Smart Accountability App: The organization is developing an innovative mobile app that allows clients to track their recovery activities daily. The app’s companion dashboard, available to public defenders at no cost, provides real-time progress and communication tools—making it easier for attorneys to support, prompt, and advocate for their clients.
By documenting real recovery work and engagement, Crescendo empowers clients to demonstrate genuine effort in court—opening doors to diversion, reduced sentencing, and lasting change.
A Collaborative Approach
Crescendo is partnering with public defenders in the Twin Cities for the initial phase, providing free access to the app and services. As the program grows, plans call for expanding both in-person and virtual support across the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area and statewide.
Initial funding is provided by a private foundation, with long-term sustainability built on donation, Medicaid billing, software licensing to county agencies, and community support.
A Powerful Vision of Inclusivity and Impact
“We believe everyone deserves the support, community, accountability, and hope that spark real recovery,” says Ulrich. “Crescendo blends lived experience and respectful care with practical tools for individuals who too often fall through the cracks.”
